Expanding Pastures, Expanding Possibilities

Piece of Heaven works every day to provide a safe space for animals who would otherwise meet tragic ends. For instance, Anne-Marie is a pig who was once abandoned on the streets of Calgary but now lives where she is cherished. Or Clementine, a horse who was left for dead after a vehicle accident but whose life was transformed after an act of kindness led her to experience love at our sanctuary. Or Maggie, a highland cow who had spent most of her life in a breeding program but is now safe and cared for.
These animals and so many more who were previously at risk of abandonment, misery or death, are now forever loved and cared for.
But running a sanctuary means constantly facing challenges and in order to continue our lifesaving mission sustainably and safely, Piece of Heaven requires some urgent upgrades.
When we started 10 years ago, we had just seven rescued animals. But now, there are more than 150 farmed animals calling our sanctuary home, all sharing a few acres of secure, fenced-in pasture. Of course, it’s hopelessly over-grazed, and needs to recover. We have to buy hay all year round for feeding purposes, which is a financially crippling and unsustainable option.
The good news is, we have more land available for grazing – we just need to fence it before it can be used!
This is where you come in! This summer, we plan to more than double the animal’s grazing space, providing them with more land to feed and more space to roam. With this expanded area and land rotation, our animals will be happier, healthier, and safer, while Piece of Heaven and our generous supporters will save money in the long-term.
The expansion requires caring people like you to come together and pitch in $20,000. This vital investment will supply:
450 wood posts
3,570 feet of wire fencing
Most importantly, quality labor: 450 holes must be dug. 450 posts must be placed. Fencing must be nailed and stapled.
